Regulation of energy homeostasis From molecular nutrition to prevention of disease 8th International Master class Nutrigenomics 6 - 8 July 2009 Wageningen, The Netherlands organised by the Graduate School VLAG, in co-operation with the Division of Human Nutrition - Wageningen University |
Background
Nutrigenomics can be seen as the smart combination of molecular nutrition and genomics. We expect that it will promote an increased understanding of how nutrition influences metabolic pathways and homeostatic control, how this regulation is disturbed in the early phases of diet-related disease, and the extent to which individual sensitizing genotypes contribute to such diseases. Eventually, nutrigenomics will lead to evidence-based dietary intervention strategies for restoring health and fitness and for preventing diet-related disease. Right now the field of nutrigenomics faces the challenge of establishing a strong basic research foundation while simultaneously surmounting a number of technological hurdles. We must be innovative in our approaches to the complex problems that nutrigenomics presents. A single nutrigenomics experiment can generate an enormous amount of data. We must rapidly learn how to extract useful biological information from these data. Accordingly PhD students working on a Nutrigenomics project have to learn to dissect a complex research question into small feasible subprojects that can be handled within their thesis. In the 8th edition of International Nutrigenomics Master class we will be very pragmatic. Next to the presentations of recent developments in Nutrigenomics research we will discuss strategies to dissect complex nutritional problems into simple questions that can be answered within a PhD project.
Target group
PhD students or Postdocs working on Nutrigenomics (nutritional genomics and genetics) projects and with a strong background in nutrition, biochemistry, physiology, molecular biology or a comparable discipline.
Course design
The Master class will discuss new promising developments in nutrigenomics research including specific aspects of human and mouse studies, molecular epidemiology, successful applications of microarray analysis, or biomarker identification strategies. All presenters will address one of the above developments in relation to the topic “regulation of energy homeostasis”. The participants will be introduced into these developments and the related techniques with special attention to their daily work and problems. There will be enough opportunities for interaction. All participants will present their research during an oral presentations for reflections with the master. In addition, participants will critically comment on each others presentations.
Also a tour to ‘Biqualys - The Advanced Anaylis Company’ in Wageningen is included in the programme.
