Background
The number of individuals with age-related mental health problems such as cognitive decline and depression is rising dramatically worldwide. The prominence of n-3 fatty acids in the brain, EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) in particular, is suggestive for their role in mental health and brain function. So far evidence that these fatty acids, which are mainly found in fatty fish, are beneficial for mental health is mostly emerging from animal and epidemiological studies. Trial evidence is limited, but there are several studies ongoing.
This symposium will give an overview of the latest developments in the field of n-3 fatty acids and mental health. The focus will be on depression as well as cognitive functioning. These fields will be assessed from different points of view with results of epidemiological studies, trials and reviews. Furthermore the implementation of the current knowledge on these areas will be discussed.
