Introduction

Background
During the last decades, awareness among scientists, politicians, health professionals and -educators of the importance of nutrition for health rapidly increased. Communication on nutrition is not limited to reports on policy development and results of scientific research but is also widely available through popular media. The Dutch Health Council stressed the urgent need for improvement of the Dutch diet and other lifestyle factors to prevent chronic diseases. The Dutch diet still contains too much (saturated) fat and intake of fruit and vegetables is below recommended levels. Of special interest is the growing number of people with overweight and severe overweight (obesity) in all gender-age classes, a serious health threat faced in many countries. In the Netherlands, up to 12 percent of young children and more than 40 percent of adults has overweight or obesity. Communication on this health problem has grown rapidly. The content of many reports and discussions on guidelines for policy development, suggestions for legislation and development of effective health interventions have reached beyond scientific journals into newspapers, magazines, TV-programmes and the Internet. Scientists have called the increasing number of people with overweight the largest nutrition-related problem of the Western world. Many questions on how to effectively move people to healthier food choice are still unanswered.

This master class will focus on new approaches to effective health promotion, starting with the client, reflecting on the salutogenic approach to health and applying this to health behaviour. We need evidence-based practice in our nutrition and health promotion, and therefore we need practice-based research. In this master class, the everyday perspective towards personalized nutrition advice will be illustrated on the basis of research results. This learns us what kind of interventions are needed to effectively influence life style, social and physical environmental factors, and especially the nutrition pattern of consumers to increase health gain. As a special case, questions and possible solutions on nutrition communication for cancer survivors will be dealt with. Last but not least, "starting with the client "will be further elaborated on the basis of research results. A workshop on client perspectives in your own work will then follow.

Target group
The master class is at postgraduate level and aims at nutritionists, physicians, nutrition educators, health promoters, health policy makers and scientists, interested in nutrition communication. The master class may be of specific use for PhD students working in this field.
