Young Algaeneers Symposium 14 - 16 June 2012 Wageningen, The Netherlands Organised by the Bioprocess Engineering Group of Wageningen University in collaboration with the Graduate School VLAG
|
Background
The Young Algaeneers Symposium is an international symposium in the field of algae biotechnology, organised by young scientists, for young scientists. PhD students (and post-docs) are in the frontlines of science and this symposium provides a unique opportunity to participate in in-depth discussions, exchange knowledge, network with fellow PhD students and initiate collaborations. This symposium will bring together a diverse group of young scientists working on a broad range of topics such as photosynthesis, downstream processing, reactor operation and growth strategies, genetic engineering, life cycle analysis, growth and metabolic modelling and photobioreactor design. This symposium will be highly interactive, with ample time for informal discussions and networking.
Target group
The symposium is restricted to young scientists in the field of algae biotechnology:

Symposium format
The symposium programme will feature both oral and poster presentations by young academic
scientists, multidisciplinary workshops, a visit to AlgaePARC* and a symposium dinner. The selection of oral and poster presentations will be based on submitted applications of the participants. The sessions intend to cover the following topics:
*AlgaePARC stands for Algae Production And Research Centre. This is the first research centre in the world which compares different outdoor photobioreactor designs, with the aim to develop knowledge, technology and process strategies for sustainable production of microalgae as feedstock for fuel, chemicals, food and feed, at an industrial scale (www.algaePARC.nl).
Programme
The programme can be downloaded here in pdf.
Keynote speakers
The Young Algaeneers symposium will welcome two keynote speakers. Both Jean-Paul Cadoret (Head of the laboratory Physiology and Biotechnology of Algae at IFREMER, France) and René Wijffels (Head of the department of Bioprocess Engineering at Wageningen UR, The Netherlands) will present their vision on the future of microalgal research.
Book of abstracts
A book of abstracts will be provided to all participants at the start of the symposium.
WIFI
Free WIFI will be available at the venue location during the symposium.
Poster presentations
During the symposium, there will be two types of poster presentations. A classic (printed) poster presentation and a (digital) poster slide show. During the poster slide show, each poster-slide will be presented for 1 minute in a slideshow. The slideshow will be presented during the poster session and during breaks. Poster presenters will be informed whether they present a printed or a digital poster.
For the printed poster, please bring your poster to the symposium. Sizing of the poster should be A0 (±1.2 m x ±0.8 m). Poster boards will be provided.
For the digital poster please send one PowerPoint sheet before the start of the symposium to young.algaeneers@wur.nl. It will not be possible to orally present additional information to your digital poster slide, so make sure that the content stands on itself. In addition, it is recommended, especially for the poster-slides, to include a picture of yourself to stimulate discussion.
Theatre presentations
Presenters of theatre presentations are requested to bring their presentation on a USB stick. Laptops with the latest version of PowerPoint will be available.
Date & duration
The symposium will be held from 14th to 16th of June 2012.
Language
The symposium language will be English.
