BACKGROUND

The strategic research programme of the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs on industrial proteins started in 1992. The aim of the programme is to bridge the gap between fundamental research at universities and applied research in industry, and to promote a vivid interaction between these two. In the programme, both PhD studentships and post- doctoral positions are funded. The final round of grants was awarded in the year 2000. The Programme Committee of the IOP- IE now focuses its attention on activities that promote the exchange of information and the dissemination of the results of the work. This symposium is an example of this activity. It is the fourth in a series. Previous international symposia took place in 1996, 1999 and 2001.

SYMPOSIUM INFORMATION

Introduction
The Innovation- Oriented Research Programme on Industrial Proteins (IOP- IE), which is now in its final stage, had as its central theme to identify and explain relations between molecular structure of proteins and their functionality in industrial applications. Considerable progress has been made, partly because of great improvements in basic knowledge and in experimental techniques. Several of the results obtained are of real importance for the industry. In the symposium, these achievements will be presented and placed in the perspective of future possibilities and needs.

Symposium format
In this fourth international symposium organised by the Programme Committee of the IOP- IE, leading scientists will present keynote lectures. Posters will be presented of IOP projects which have been completed or are still in progress. Additional posters are invited.
The opening session will include a keynote lecture on functional properties. Then four plenary sessions follow on the main four classes of proteins applied in industry: (1) globular proteins, (2) gluten, (3) collagen and its derivative gelatine, (4) casein. The closing session will include some lectures on future needs and developments. Moreover, all the posters will be on display from Thursday morning till Friday afternoon.

Location
The symposium will be held at the Reehorst Conference Centre in Ede. Ede is situated at the centre of the Netherlands about 80 km south- east of Amsterdam. The conference centre can be reached by train from Amsterdam Schiphol Airport to Ede- Wageningen in approximately one hour. The conference centre is at 5 minutes walking distance from the railway station Ede- Wageningen. The conference centre includes a 90- bed hotel facility.
In order to be guaranteed of accommodation at the conference centre delegates should register at the conference secretariat before February 22th, 2003
