PhD excursion Laboratory of Physical Chemistry and Colloid Science to Sweden and Denmark

VLAG FLASH - August 2007, Edition 10

From the 23rd of June till the 8th of July, 13 PhD students and 1 post-doc of the Laboratory of Physical Chemistry and Colloid Science have visited Sweden and Denmark. Chaperoned by three Fysko-professors (one at a time); prof. Hans Lyklema, prof. Martien Cohen Stuart and prof. Willem Norde, universities and companies where visited in Stockholm, Uppsala, Gotenborg, Stenungsund, Lund, Kopenhagen and Aarhus. Each day consisted of a number of presentations from the host-institution, a number of presentations from Fysko's PhD students, a tour of the facilities and usually followed by an informal discussion of the communal scientific and non-scientific interests during lunch or dinner. During these visits many useful contacts have been established, which will hopefully lead to scientific cooperation in the (near) future. Half-way during the week, the entire group participated in the European Student Conference on the island of Hven, for PhD students in the field of Physical Chemistry. During this 3-day conference, over 60 PhD students from all European countries presented their latest work. Other highlights of the excursion where the visit to YKI/KTH in Stockholm and the interesting discussions on industrial problems during our visits to Akzo Nobel Surface Chemistry (Stenungsund, Sweden), Biacore (Uppsala) and Novozymes (Kopenhagen).
All-in-all it can be concluded that the excursion was successful in bringing together the Fysko PhD students with their Scandinavian colleagues, in hopes of a fruitful exchange of scientific ideas and possibilities for future cooperation.
