In this VLAG FLASH we would like to draw your attention to VLAG events, WGS courses and other events. Enough choices to find a suitable course for staff members as well as Postdoc's and PhD students.
We have indicated before that early registration for courses makes life for the VLAG-secretariat much easier. So, if you are intending to participate in one of the following activities please register as soon as possible:

New chairman VLAG Board

During the Board meeting which took place on 11 February, Dr. Ronald P. Mensink, Professor of Molecular Nutrition with emphasis on lipid metabolism at the Department of Human Biology (Maastricht University) was elected new chairman of the Board.
Renewed International Advisory Board
We are honoured to announce that Prof. Ian MacDonald and Prof. Thomas Ohlsson have agreed to join VLAG International Advisory Board.
Prof. Ian MacDonald is professor of Metabolic Physiology and director of research of Faculty of Medicine & Health Sciences at University of Nottingham.
His main interests are:

Prof. Thomas Ohlsson has just retired from the position as director of a research group on Environmental and Process engineering and Vice President of SIK-The Swedish Institute of Food and Biotechnology in Gothenburg, Sweden.

Food fermentation - 3rd edition

After an introduction into the biodiversity of fermentation micro-organisms and the product technologies involved, this course deals with the specific aspects of functionality related to health, flavour and ingredients, models and control of fermentation and quality, and ~omics in particular the relevance of proteomics, genomics and metabolomics in fermentation innovation and control. |

Pectins and pectinases symposium - 3rd edition

This symposium will provide an up-to-date insight into the research on pectin and pectic enzymes involved in their biosynthesis, degradation, modification or utilization. It will function as a 'state of the art' podium for both beginners and experts working in all disciplines of pectin research. |

Bioreactor Design and Operation - 4th edition
23 - 27 June 2008, Wageningen
Products from biotechnology cover a wide range, from pharmaceutical blockbusters to bulk energy carriers. In the research phase for new products main attention goes to the optimization of the microorganism. Genomics, physiology and metabolic engineering are the main study tools. Scale of operation is not really important in this case. |

Update PhD study tour Food Chemistry 2008
From October 11th until 26th 2008, a group of 18 PhD students and 2 staff members will visit China. They will start their journey in Beijing, and from there they will travel south to China's largest city, Shanghai. Shanghai city will be their starting point to explore the Shanghai area and Wuxi city.

Science for Health Poster prize 2008
For over 70 years Yakult is the pioneer in probiotics and is stimulating good research into probiotics, gutflora and health.
This poster prize (€ 750,-) is an encouragement for everyone aiming their research at the dynamic and often complex role of pathogenic and functional bacteria in food and the consequences of those bacteria for our health. Everyone working in the field of microbiology, gastro-enterology, medicine, food safety, food technology, dietetics and health in the Netherlands is invited to submit a poster.
Specific areas of interest: Host-bacteria interactions, Therapeutic effects, Biomarkers, Immune modulation.
