Wageningen Code of Conduct for Scientific Practice - Principles of good scientific teaching and research
Wageningen Code of Conduct for Scientific Practice is based on the Netherlands Code of Conduct for Scientific Practice (Code of Conduct), approved by the General Board of the Association of Universities in the Netherlands, VSNU. The Executive Board of Wageningen UR has declared this Code of Conduct to be applicable to all of Wageningen UR. It replaces the Wageningen UR Ethical Guidelines, which became void. ( visit WUR)
Collaboration with FOOD Research School from Denmark ( visit FOOD)
On 16 & 17 February the management of the FOOD Research School from Denmark (Prof. Leif Skibsted, Lars Rasmussen, and Henriette Hansen) visited VLAG-Wageningen in order to discuss various forms of collaboration. PhD students affiliated with FOOD regularly attend VLAG-courses. Several research groups from Wageningen and Maastricht have an intensive cooperation within EC-funded projects.
Recently a Marie Curie Initial Training Network proposal submitted by a consortium of various FOOD and VLAG partners, University of Athens, and few industry partners was approved by Brussels. The research within this ITN 'Enzyme technology for Lean and Green Food' will tackle the challenges of improved utilisation of natural resources to create high-added value food products from biomass/agricultural raw materials with less water consumption, reduced energy expenditure and limited use of chemical reagents and synthetic ingredients.
Later this year FOOD will organise a few activities that might be of interest for VLAG PhD students:
• |
PhD course 'Molecular Food Microbiology' (15 - 26 June) |
• |
PhD course 'Food Chemistry - Stability of foods' (22 - 26 June) |
• |
FOOD Denmark Congress 2009 (15 - 16 June) |

Kees de Graaf new professor Sensory Science and Eating Behaviour
Wageningen University has appointed Kees de Graaf from the Division of Human Nutrition as full professor in Sensory Science and Eating Behaviour from 1 January 2009 onwards. The chair focuses on the role of sensory signals in food choice and food intake. Sensory signals lead to a cascade of (neuro)-biological and psychological processes that have a big impact on eating behaviour. One of the central perspectives of this new chair group is that sensory signals of food get meaning through their association with environmental cues, and through the association with physiological, psychological and social consequences of eating.
Three scientific staff members will be appointed, a food technologist, an experimental psychologist, and a biologist. Together with the chair holder, these three persons form the interdisciplinary nucleus of the new group in this exciting scientific field and will approach it in a coherent way from different perspectives. New techniques will be applied, such as olfactometry in relation to mass-spectrometry (MSNOSE) to characterize sensory exposure, and neuroimaging to characterize sensory perception and food reward. The mission is to perform excellent research and teaching within this field. The chair is strategically positioned between the Division of Human Nutrition and the Product Design & Quality Management group (PDQ) of the Food Technology cluster. A consortium of food sector companies (including Heineken, Unilever, IFF Nederland, FrieslandCampina, Mars Nederland and Suikerstichting Nederland) will be financing 50% of Professor De Graaf´s Chair.

PhD-course: Food, medicine and philosophy in East and West
From 13th of November until 5th of December the PhD-course Food, medicine and philosophy in East and West took place. This broadening course was organised by the Danish research school FOOD and I was the only one participating from VLAG. The course aimed (and succeeded!) to give us an improved understanding of the scientific, cultural and philosophical background of specific diet habits and health views. Being an international group of about 15 PhD-students from several academic fields, we could have interdisciplinary discussions about the different scientific areas covered in the course. The first part of the course consisted of a series of intense lectures at the University of Copenhagen. After these preparations we travelled to Hong Kong and Guangzhou (China) to observe what we have learned in Copenhagen. The field studies in Hong Kong and China included food markets, hospitals, universities and religious sites. In this way, traditions from the Western world were contrasted with those in the far East. We were made aware of both the potentials and limitations of Western science and medicine, and of their role in the dietary globalization. After the trip to Asia, every participant wrote a report about a selected topic related to his/her PhD-project. This was presented and examined at the end of the course. To conclude, the course was very interesting and really broadening for me! It was very nice to have the combination of lectures and field trips, so you could learn by experience!
