Advanced course: The Intestinal Microbiome and Diet in Human and Animal Health, 4th edition
Background
The intestinal tract of humans and animals is colonized by thousands of different microorganisms that together comprise our microbiome, closely interact with each other and their mammalian host, and are intimately linked to how we deal with our diets.
Target group
The course is aimed at postgraduates (MSc, PhD) with a background in animal, veterinary, biological, health, or food sciences and open for participants from both industry and universities/research centers.
Course aim
This course aims to provide a detailed scientific background on the mechanisms that underlie the role of the microbiome in human and animal nutrition and health. The program combines knowledge on microbial composition and function with dietary and genetic factors in humans, laboratory and farm animals, as well as the development of relevant in vitro model systems.
Course design
The course consists of a series of lectures providing the latest scientific knowledge on the different subjects, short presentations by participants, a poster session and an interactive session.
Participants are challenged to actively contribute to discussions. Within the programme one session is devoted to three-minute pitches by participants, there is a poster session and an interactive session on three specific topics.

Location & accommodation
The course venue is Conference Centre Hof van Wageningen. The town of Wageningen is 5 km from Ede-Wageningen railway station, with transport options being taxi or bus. Ede-Wageningen railway station is about one and a half hours from Amsterdam Schiphol Airport. For train schedules visit: www.ns.nl.
A number of hotel rooms have been blocked at the conference centre “Hof van Wageningen”, but only until 24 December 2016. Accommodation costs are € 80 - 98.50 (single room/twin room) per night. Cancellations may be made free of charge until 6 January 2017. After this date the charge will be 25% of the course fee already paid or due. Substitutions for participants may be made at any time until the start of the course.
Course fee includes printed materials, coffee/tea during breaks, lunches and the course dinner but does not cover accommodation. The course fee depends on the participant's affiliation:
