Introduction to the master class series
Background
In the past ten years, Academic Collaborative Centres (ACC) have been established to bridge the gap between the fields of policy, practice and research. These ACCs are consortia of Public Health Services and Universities in the Netherlands. At present there are nine ACCs in the field of public health.
The aim of this master class series is to make knowledge and experiences acquired in these ACC’s available for public health professionals and researchers working in the domain of public health.
Target group
The master classes are especially developed for public health researchers and professionals from policy or practice, working in the field of population health, health promotion, epidemiology, nutrition and health sciences, infectious diseases, primary health care, youth health care, health policy and communication sciences.
Course design
Currently, there is a strong demand for effective policies and programs from national as well as local governments in the public health domain. To contribute to this, insight in the implementation process and effectiveness of these programs is required. Evaluation studies are conducted to provide this insight. Evaluation research in public health practice needs distinct attention for two key reasons:
- the object of research is a societal problem that will be approached in its own context;
- societal problems are often complex problems in which a wide variety of actors play a role.
Therefore, evaluating public health interventions in real-life settings requires specific methods. In this master class a framework for process evaluation of complex interventions will be introduced that can be used to assess fidelity and quality of implementation, clarify causal mechanisms and identify contextual factors associated with variation in outcomes. The theory will be illustrated with examples from practice and further discussed during the group work. In addition, methods to measure and analyse intervention delivery in relation to program outcomes are presented and discussed.

Master lecturer
Dr. Graham Moore, DECIPHer, School of Social Sciences, Cardiff University, UK
Graham Moore is currently a Senior Lecturer in Social Sciences and Health and a member of the management team within the Centre for the Development and Evaluation of Complex Interventions for Public Health Improvement (DECIPHer). He has an international reputation as a specialist in methodology for evaluating complex interventions, having recently led the development and authorship of new high impact MRC guidance for process evaluation of complex interventions. He has also published widely in the field of tobacco control, including papers on young people's exposure to secondhand smoke credited with informing a decision to ban smoking in cars carrying children. He led two of the first papers on youth e-cigarette use, attracting worldwide media attention. From 2013-2016, his post has been funded by a competitively obtained personal fellowship from the Medical Research Council, which investigates the role of schools in mitigating or perpetuating inequalities in health. He is a member of the management group for the School Health Research Network in Wales, and lead a programme of multi-level analysis examining associations between school-level actions and pupil health.

The course venue is Hotel and Conference Centre "Hof van Wageningen". The town of Wageningen is 5 km from Ede-Wageningen railway station, with transport options being taxi or bus. Registrations are accepted in the order in which the registration form and course fee payment are received. After 26 September they will then receive instructions for payment, and further course details (i.e. assignment) by email. Cancellations may be made free of charge until 26 September 2016. After this date the charge will be 25 % of the course fee paid or due. Substitutions may be made at any time.
