Samenvatting

Plants rely on their root systems as a crucial interface for interacting with their environment, facilitating resource uptake and supporting plant growth. Root branching, especially through lateral root formation, plays a pivotal role in shaping the architecture of the root system, greatly enhancing the plant's ability to explore and optimize resource acquisition in complex and heterogeneous soil environments.

By investigating the spatial and temporal dynamics of lateral root formation in Arabidopsis thaliana, we have gained insights into the mechanisms governing lateral root priming, regulatory networks controlling lateral root morphogenesis, and environmental influences on root architecture. Our findings highlight the complex interplay between genetic factors and environmental cues, revealing the delicate balance between developmental robustness and plasticity in plants. By bridging gaps in our knowledge, this research not only deepens our understanding of plant survival strategies but also holds promise for applications in agriculture and environmental conservation.
