About VLAG

VLAG Graduate School was founded in 1993 to provide a coherent PhD programme for young researchers and to bring together the expertise in its multidisciplinary domain.

VLAG Graduate School forms an academic community for research and post-graduate education in the areas of Biobased, Biomolecular, Chemical, Food and Nutrition Sciences.
It provides a platform and support for professional development of early-stage researchers, and for research collaboration within and across these areas. This academic community consists of researchers from twenty-two Wageningen University (WU) chair groups and two major institutes for applied research (WR).

Since 2018, all research within VLAG Graduate School is streamlined within four Research Themes that combine the strengths and expertise of the participating chair groups:

  • Research Theme I: Chemistry for Life Sciences and Bio-based Economy
  • Research Theme II: Food Science & Technology
  • Research Theme III: Human Nutrition & Health
  • Research Theme IV: Biological Systems & Interactions

Scientific research within VLAG covers the whole range from fundamental sciences to application-oriented research, and as such it impacts societal challenges through e.g., improved sustainability, nutrition, and health.

As part of Wageningen University & Research, the VLAG research community contributes to the overarching WUR mission ‘To explore the potential of nature to improve the quality of life’.

VLAG Graduate School is one of six Graduate Schools at Wageningen University that host the Wageningen University PhD programme. As such, VLAG provides a framework for doctoral education and research training. It supports the development of independent scientists able to perform excellent science for impact.

To this end we provide an extensive portfolio of post-graduate level scientific courses, as well as a comprehensive package of training activities to enhance professional skills and competences of PhD candidates, postdoctoral researchers, and their supervisors.

Moreover, to support our academic community, spark crosspollination of knowledge and expertise, and catalyse new collaboration we have the following instruments at hand:

  • VLAG Open Rounds to fund PhD and postdoctoral research projects to explore new research leads.
  • VLAG Research Fellowships programme to promote the quality of scientific research and strengthen international collaborations.
  • Talent programmes including Sandwich PhD Programme and Postdoc Programme.
