Advanced Organic Chemistry
Advanced course for PhD candidates with a solid background and interest in Organic Chemistry, who are intrinsically motivated to develop an advanced understanding of modern organic chemistry and gain insight into reaction mechanisms and the underlying concepts.

Target group
The course is useful for PhD candidates with a solid background and interest in Organic Chemistry, who are intrinsically motivated to develop an advanced understanding of modern organic chemistry and gain insight into reaction mechanisms and the underlying concepts.
Required knowledge:
ORC-12803 Organic Chemistry 1 and ORC-12903 Organic Chemistry 2 (or comparable), knowledge based on a standard text book such as e.g. Organic Chemistry by J. McMurry.
Preferably, also ORC-30806 Structure and Reactivity.
Course aim
- Develop advanced understanding of modern organic chemistry
- Insight into reaction mechanisms and the underlying concepts
- Develop an eye for synthetic strategies towards molecular structures with predesigned properties
- Develop an understanding of the overlap of organic chemistry with neighbouring disciplines (biology, materials sciences)
Course design
The course consists of 10 sessions per year, 2-3 hours per session. The format for each session can vary between group presentations & discussion, problem solving sessions, short lectures by staff members or a combination. For each session the course material will involve ~ 5 hrs of preparatory reading. Also, active participation during the sessions is compulsory.
You can start participating in the course at any time, but starting from September 2019 onwards has the advantage of starting with 3 recap lectures.

Lectures will be given on the campus of Wageningen University, Helix building.
Registration & course fee
Participation is free of charge for PhD candidates of the Graduate Schools VLAG, EPS, PE&RC, WIMEK, WIAS and WASS.
Course materials vary with each session and may consist of sections to read from the main AOC course textbook: Organic Chemistry, Clayden/Greeves/Warren, 2nd edition, as well as selected scientific literature.
